Extended Reality in the Education Industry is the Future of Digital Learning
Teaching/learning technologies have changed drastically over time. Technology alters teaching and learning instruments from overhead projectors and blackboards to SMART boards, PCs, and tablets. Extended reality and other recent technological improvements can give students in different fields more chances to be creative and innovative in their education in new ways.
When compared to the traditional method of instruction, which consists of lecturing and presenting information on a screen or in written form, the use of technologies that utilize XR technologies can offer an alternative approach to resolving some of the issues that are present in traditional education.
When used in the classroom, technologies such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR) can give students engaging and novel experiences that they won’t soon forget.
Use-Cases of Extended Reality in the Education Industry
In 2023, Michigan Ross showed off the Convatec Digital Learning Studio, a state-of-the-art XR digital education studio. Students enrolled in the Online MBA and Executive Education programs at the Ross School of Business can use the new digital education studio, which places them in a virtual classroom.
The studio makes a 3D environment where online students can join a fully engaged classroom group. The graphics technology utilized in the studio is identical to that which is utilized in immersive video games. As a result, the instructor and the students have the impression that they are physically in the same room together.
The Kansas State University Salina Aerospace and Technology Campus revealed the Immersive Technology Classroom, an extended reality lab, in 2023. It brings together virtual, physical, and augmented reality technology that students can use to improve their learning.
The lab has an immersive video wall that shows different views from different devices and an immersive audio system that is built into the room to make it a more active space for students. Students in programs such as digital media technology, computer systems technology, machine learning and autonomous systems, and web development technology will be able to use the new room.
In 2023, EON Reality announced a major update to its EON-XR platform that will help educators and trainers solve the most significant content creation problem they face in XR. The new AI-generated content feature uses spatial AI to create customized learning experiences for different educational levels and local needs. An AI-powered avatar was added in the most recent update to the EON-XR platform.
This avatar automatically removes the demand for educators and trainers to build their own content or look for existing libraries, saving them time and money. The content can be changed to fit local languages and needs for different levels of education, such as Kâ12, technical vocational training, and higher education.
